Moon and Stars Watermelon
Moon and Stars (red flesh) seeded watermelons are incredibly sweet with crispy flesh when harvested at the optimum time. There are a few ways to tell when the watermelon is ripe. You can check the belly spot to see if it has turned from white to yellow. You can listen for a hollow sound while tapping the exterior. And you can look at the last tendril near the fruit to see if it has dried. Fruit can weigh as much as 25 pounds. An open-pollinated heirloom that is very popular in the Amish community. The exterior is dark green with yellow spots that look like stars. An occasional large yellow dot represents the moon. Plants should be placed 18 inches apart and 6 feet apart in rows. Direct seed when soil temperatures are 70 to 75 degrees. 90 to 95 days.
