The name of this tomato is French for black pineapple and that is because it arose out of a planting of Pineapple Tomato in a Belgian garden. While its fruit is the same 1 to 1 1/2 lb. size as the Pineapple tomato, the color and flavor are totally different. The exterior is dark purple and green with pink-red splotches and a touch of yellow, while the inside is bright green streaked with pink. The hues bleed into one another reminding one of a piece of tie-dyed fabric. Flavor is special too, sweet yet rich and delicious. Expect large plants and heavy yields.  Indeterminate. 80 days.

The origin of this tomato is believed to be from Dr. Harold Martin, who was a hobby gardener and a dentist.  He did not release the tomato in the 1920s when it was first selected, but it was released later by a person who inherited Dr. Martin’s collection.  Initially there were some concerns about the variability of the variety, and it has taken time for people to judge the plant.  It is indeterminate and purple-maroon in color, weighing 5 to 8 ounces.  It has a sweet fruity flavor.  The current selection from the collection is a regular leaf type.  85 days.

This is a breakthrough new variety of large round red tomatoes developed at the University of Florida by Dr. Jay Scott. It is notable for its potential as a commercial tomato bred especially for vine-ripe harvest and great flavor. This also suits it well to home gardens and to production for fruit stands and farmers' markets.
